BioMar expanding shrimp feed capacity in Ecuador

BioMar’s shrimp feed facilities in Ecuador, acquired in 2017, are operating at full speed. The company is now investing in a new production line based on extrusion technology that will expand its annual output capacity by some 40,000 tonnes.

BioMar, the world’s third-largest manufacturer of quality feed for the fish farming industry, took a big strategic step forward last year in acquiring Ecuadorian shrimp feed manufacturer Alimentsa. Having increased the output capacity shortly after taking over Alimentsa, BioMar, which is owned by the Danish industrial conglomerate Schouw & Co., is now announcing further expansion in Ecuador:

- The production of shrimp in Ecuador is growing at double digits, and we’re producing at maximum capacity. To alleviate the situation, we have a new line ready for commissioning, and we will now be investing additionally DKK 50 million in a production line based on extrusion technology, explained BioMar CEO Carlos Diaz.

Most of the world’s shrimp feed today is based on the relatively simple pelletising technology. BioMar has several years of experience in applying extrusion technology, which is used for highly efficient production of salmon feed and other high-performance feed types. Extrusion enables a more optimal recipe formulation and therefore a more flexible production and wider product range, and BioMar has already produced extruded shrimp feed in the recent five years in Costa Rica:

- Before we established a presence in Ecuador, shrimp was the largest business area in global aquaculture that BioMar was not involved in. We’re now transferring our experience and know-how from manufacturing feed for some 45 other species, Mr Diaz continued.

Currently the world’s third-largest shrimp producing country, Ecuador covers the entire value chain from producing shrimp larvae and shrimp feed to mature shrimp that are exported to all parts of the world. BioMar supplies 10-15% of the feed in the very important Ecuadorian market, and the company has recently established a new research and test facility at the factory site in order to develop feed in close cooperation with the customers. BioMar employs some 175 people at the factory in Ecuador and also has factory sites in Norway, Chile, Denmark, Scotland, Spain, France, Greece, Costa Rica, China and Turkey. BioMar supplies more than 1.1 million tonnes of feed each year to more than 80 countries.
